Seacoast Huddle endorses Rep. Mindi Messmer for Congress

July 16, 2018

We are happy to announce that Seacoast Huddle is endorsing Mindi Messmer for Congress. Our group did extensive research on nine Democratic candidates for the First Congressional District of NH. We looked at their activism prior to declaring for CD1, instead of simply reviewing their campaign platforms. As a result, we reported on three issues where we saw major differences between the candidates.

First, Mindi Messmer is an environmental scientist who has an incredibly strong history of fighting to protect the environment (i.e. - Coakley Landfill, NH Safe Water Alliance, Pediatric Cancer Task Force). As a scientist, she is uniquely qualified to address the myriad of environmental hazards that we face.

Second, Messmer has a proven record as a tireless advocate for women. Messmer successfully worked across the aisle to defeat several bills hostile to women and their families.  She fought on the floor to protect women’s access to contraception and reproductive health care, and to kill the abortion registry bill in 2018.

And third, Seacoast Huddle believes that Campaign Finance is a critical issue for our country. So we dug deep into FEC Campaign Receipt filings to see what the candidates truly believe. Here is what we found regarding Messmer’s fundraising:  89.4% money is In State (highest of all the candidates), 52% of contributions are less than $200 (vs. Sullivan 2.51% and Pappas 3.49%), 100% from individual donors, and 0% from PACs or other big money sources. Why are we focusing on money? We believe that if candidates are benefiting from PACs and other “big money” they are much less likely to fight hard for Campaign Finance Reform.
