"It is not a secret that we are living in very troubled times in which common sense values seem to get ignored in favor of those of special interests that favor relatively few Americans. As one who grew up in the 1960s and early 70s, my engagement in supporting leaders who were willing to speak out and work in the public interest. In that era, it seemed easier to identify individuals who advocated and worked for changes that benefited the social wellbeing of communities they served and the nation as a whole – such as peace, human rights, social justice, health care for all, environmental protection, women’s rights, jobs with reasonable wages and benefits, social security, and respect for all individuals regardless of who they were or from where they came.

Over the next 40 or so years, the number of such leaders seemed to lessen. For some, they were simply unable to secure the needed resources to mount the effective campaigns to compete with the special interests, for others, they may have been simply unable to rise above the trend toward growing voter apathy or even the loss of hope that brighter times were achievable … with a strength of conviction, hard work, and even some self-sacrifice. Like many others, I found myself, once labeled as an idealist, losing the activism of my youth and my willingness to work on improving our overall social condition and well-being.

I believe that as residents of New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District, we have the opportunity to support an extraordinary candidate in Mindi Messmer. As a scientist, small business owner, and policy-maker, she has in recent years exhibited her commitment, dedication, effectiveness, and expertise that we truly need, particularly in these times. As a current State Representative, she has demonstrated her effectiveness as a legislator and as an experienced environmental scientist (admitting that she never planned a career in politics). She is prepared to work tirelessly for New Hampshire in Washington. She is willing to reach beyond party lines to find common ground on issues important to New Hampshire (as she has repeatedly done in Concord). She is an effective consensus builder while knowing when and how to stand firmly behind the evidence in reaching important decisions.

Particularly important to me, as a public health professional, advocate, and educator for more than 40 years, is her demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the cornerstones of public health – prevention, protection, and population health in addition to her years of expertise as a scientist in the private sector. She recognizes the use of science and evidence-based reasoning both in general and in the policy-making process. I ask that you join me to proudly help make Mindi Messmer our next U.S. Congresswoman from New Hampshire."
