Messmer is my choice for Congress
Jan. 8 -- To the Editor:
In 2018, Democratic primary voters in the 1st Congressional district will have several excellent candidates to choose from. But Mindi Messmer has clearly separated herself from field.
As a private citizen, she uncovered a previously undetected cancer cluster on the Seacoast. As a state representative, she fought to help the affected families and to change state and federal laws to lower “acceptable levels” of perflourocarbons in our water. She was also worked to pass a bill to protect children by testing for lead in school water systems.
As a child, I lived in Woburn, Massachusetts. My part of town was affected by contaminated water and a cancer cluster that took the lives of many children in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I saw with my own eyes how the inaction of public officials can change lives and, in some cases, end them.
Every person deserves clean air and water no matter where they live. It’s not something to be bargained away at the expense of the people who depend on it.
In her short time in the legislature, Mindi has done superb work fighting to protect people from harmful contaminants and from government inaction. But it’s a mistake to pigeonhole her as just “an environmental candidate”. I’ve been in the State House gallery and in committee rooms where I’ve seen Mindi passionately advocating for human rights, health care, and many other issues. I’ve also seen how she uses her knowledge and her scientific background to bring people together around common values.
The bottom line is that Mindi Messmer is an excellent choice to continue the legacy of Carol Shea-Porter.
